Thursday, February 6: Up at 6am, out of the hotel by 6:30. We headed North, then turned inland and headed towards Waimea, where we had breakfast at the "Hawaiian Style Cafe". They served us the largest breakfast either of us had ever seen. It came on two large oval plates. One was for the two pancakes, which were about 10 inches in diameter and half an inch thick. The other plate had two large eggs (must have been ostrich eggs by the amount) and a giant pile of crispy bacon (from about half a pig). And the whole thing was $6! We finished what we could, but left about two thirds behind. Then we headed towards the East side of the island.
First we stopped at Umauma Falls, a three tiered waterfall. The welcome center there gave us some great miniature apple-bannanas which were really tasty. Back on the highway we next stopped at Akaka falls, a 400 foot water fall. We hiked around through the forest to get there, looking at some amazing huge bamboo trees. Afterwards we drove through the 4 mile scenic drive which goes by the botanical gardens. Our next destination was the Hilo Airport!
